An event like PIGShibition doesn’t just “happen.” It’s the hard work of many dedicated volunteers and also through the generosity of individuals, organizations and businesses, all of whom share and support the idea that literacy betters and empowers the NWA as a whole. This Sponsor Spotlight segment focuses on our partners of the PIGShibition event , offering a “behind the scenes” look into the “why” of PIGShibition, the decision-making process and highlighting each sponsor’s thoughts toward literacy and community involvement.
Downstream Casino Resort, our neighbors to the north (more or less) provides a Las Vegas-style entertainment experience for everyone, influenced by the rich history of Native American culture. So it was only natural that their choice was “Pig Spender!” Sean Harrison, Public Relations Manager, showed us his cards on why Downstream is so enthusiastic about PIGShibition:
What was it about PIGShibition and the Ozark Literacy Council that persuaded you to be a part of this unique event?
PIGShibition sounded like so much fun — Downstream just didn’t want to be left out! We have supported Ozark Literacy Council over the years, so it’s a given that we are always eager to hear about their fund-raisers and programs. But with this, hey, we knew about the cows in Chicago and other similar community art projects in other places, and we felt like Northwest Arkansas deserved as good as any. We are a little north, near Joplin, Mo., and also part of Oklahoma and Kansas, but we consider ourselves active players in the Fayetteville and NWA regional communities. So this helps us remind everyone that we’re with you. And if it’s something fun and kooky — yes, come on, PIGShibition is a bit kooky — well then as we say in the business, we are “all in.”
Why did you pick the pig design that you did? What was it about that design that spoke to you above all the other great choices?
We picked the artist Mary Jo Gover, primarily, and then we wanted Mary Jo to come up with the design herself. Mary Jo is a member of the Quapaw Tribe–Downstream Casino Resort is owned and operated by the Quapaw Tribe–and we knew about her talent. So we asked her to come up with something that would reflect some of Downstream’s personality. She nailed it. “Pig Spender” has a sense of humor.
What do people say to you about your pig?
We have been hearing that it’s going to be a very popular swine at the “Piggies Go To Market” event in March. Everyone loves the John Daly “Loud Mouth” golf pants. Some of the other design elements were inspired by Coach Barry Switzer. See, Daly and Switzer are our celebrity spokesmen, and the stars of our TV commercials.
Any anecdotes or comments you’d like to share?
We had hoped to have John Daly and Barry Switzer sign their autographs to “Pig Spender,” but those two are difficult to corral. We’re hoping to do that later. Maybe when we’re all in town for a Razorback game.
